  • AGENTS are a portion of an industry and do a specific job to find securing works for the artists. Licensed agents work for talents that engage in the occupation of offering, procuring or attempting to procure employment for an artist. The talent agent works on a commission procured by the artist’s earnings, typically not more than ten percent of any earnings made by the artist. An agent is the legal source of an artist’s opportunity  that permits the artist a negotiable contract for work.

  • An artist manager plays a vital role in shaping the career of the artist given his role of duties in the day to day life of the artist. They sometimes create, market, merchandise strategies, booking suitable gigs, plan album projects and recording sessions, film releases and tours. They are usually hired to think and plan for the artist. They are also brand advisors and business advocates of the artist. An artist manager’s duties depend on the industry and also the size of the client’s career. They hire staff for the artist, handle media exposure and PR too. Appearance on television shows, interviews with journalists and presence on social media needs to be guided and advised on point and this role is played by a manager. They do have a say on contracts and career of the artist but cannot negotiate job contracts on their behalf. They tend to manage the monetary flow of business and even advise on investments and income plans. Usually they stick to one client at a time given the plethora of responsibilities they serve in an artist’s career.
  •  An artist agent procures casting opportunities in terms of shoots, ads, etc., to the artist. They are basically money making machines for the artist that are not at the peak of their career. A good agent ideally brings opportunities to the artist’s table and helps him secure contacts in the business and meet influential people. An agent’s work is subjected to maintaining their end of the legal contracts through the artist.

Difference between artist Manager vs Agent:

As far as an artist’s career is concerned both agent and manager are strategic partners and both play a key role in lighting up an artist’s career. But then being quite similar there are few differences between them. They are:-

  1. Agents can arrange casting calls, get you work, or negotiate contracts or deals but managers can’t do so.
  2. Unlike agents, managers do not require certification or special licensing. Nor do they need to work for a management company, though some do. An artist’s manager can be anyone that is why relatives or friends tend to do that role.
  3. Managers can have you as their only client, which makes sure about high level of personal attention,unlike agents. They can also stay with you throughout your career, not like the agents who keep coming and going.
  4. As the agents most probably work on commission basis and managers are hired on fixed salary or certain percentage of actors income, the fees may exceed those of an agent as they can run as long as 15 or 20 percent.
  5. Managers have relations with artists that agents do not have. Such relations help the artists to meet producers,writers and other people that aren’t just limited in a specific project. These are the people who plan to do the things and who could put you in their plans, unlike agents.
  6. Unlike agents they can connect you to the writer who can specially write for you and they don’t put pressure on agents to produce and bring more work for the artist. Or either doing all this stuff managers can find you a good agent who can do that for an artist.
  7. The other big difference is that agents can’t take more than ten percent  of their clients earning but managers don’t go through such restrictions. Most of them only accept 10% but very few ask for 15%, this means that they take 15% of clients earning upto $50,000 during one year period, but it drops to 10% if you make more than that.
